All the Books and insight into the Characters

Lyndon Stacey's Books are mostly set in rural Southern England. A key aspect is the relationship between the protagonist and the animals, be they Horse or Dog, that feature in the plots.

“The man clearly thrived on inflicting fear, and even if he was quaking inside, Daniel was damned if he was going to give his tormentor the satisfaction of seeing it in his face.

The balaclava leaned close and whispered in his ear. ‘Why don’t you be a good boy and go back where you come from? We don’t want troublemakers round here.’

Daniel said nothing. He didn’t get the feeling it was intended to be a conversation.”

Blindfold  (2003)

‘The blindfold was a major hindrance. So much depended on body language with animals… Without it, it felt uncomfortably like a game of Russian roulette.’

Gideon Blake, artist and animal behaviourist, is used to dealing with distressed and unpredictable animals. But on one cold February night he is faced with the challenge of his life. Abducted from his home, handcuffed and blindfolded, Gideon is inexplicably forced by his violent captors to catch a dangerous and highly-strung stallion. Though severely handicapped by the blindfold and fearing certain death, he has no choice but to comply.

Bruised and bewildered by the events of that fateful night, Gideon ignores his abductors’ threats to stay silent and resolves to find out who was behind this sadistic and seemingly irrational act. But a chance encounter leads to a shocking discovery, one that makes Gideon question the motives of those closest to him and brings the devastating realisation that danger lies very close to home…

Deadfall  (2004)

Linc Tremayne, heir to a viscountcy and manager of his father’s Dorset estate, has one burning ambition – to be selected to ride on the British Olympic three-day-eventing team. But his dream is about to be put on hold. Arriving at the stables late one night to prepare his horse for a competition the next day, Linc walks into a crisis. Thieves have targeted the tackroom and viciously attacked fifteen-year-old Abby Hathaway, the stable owners’ daughter, leaving her unconscious.

As Abby lies in a coma, what seems like freak chance sets Linc on the track of the thieves. Disregarding the advice of the investigating officer and increasingly unpleasant warnings from those involved, he juggles sleuthing with his demanding job and a competitive riding career. But as the violence against him escalates and begins to affect those close to him, Linc soon realises that someone, undercover of the trouble he has stirred up, is trying to kill him for reasons of their own, and the race is on to find out who, before they succeed…

This could be the racing scoop of a lifetime.

But, as the date of the Gold Cup draws ever closer, it is unclear whether the missing horse is still alive. Where could a valuable racehorse be hidden for so long? And what is the secret from the owner’s past that he is keeping from the police? Doggedly chasing the truth, Ben finds himself tested, both physically and psychologically, as he gradually uncovers a tale of prejudice, ambition and heartbreak.

Time To Pay (aka Six To One Against) (2006)

Revenge has no limits…

Damien Daniels has been murdered; shot out of the saddle by an expert marksman while exercising his horse. It looks like a professional job, but who would want to kill a popular ex-jockey who trains racehorses for a living?

The only witness to the shooting, Gideon Blake, is unable to provide any information that would help the police. However a cryptic list he later discovers hidden among the dead man’s possessions hints at a dark and terrible conspiracy.

As Matt begins to uncover some dark secrets – secrets that someone will kill to protect – he quickly learns that loyalty at all costs carries a lethal price.

No Going Back  (2010)

When two young sisters get lost on Dartmoor, Daniel Whelan and his German Shepherd, Taz, are called into action – his past experience as a police dog handler having helped find a missing toddler just weeks earlier. A desperate search of the wild and wintry moor quickly turns up one of the girls, however, rather than showing relief at being rescued, she seems terrified and Daniel cannot help but notice the rather strange behaviour of her father and uncle. Poor weather and the encroaching darkness halts their search for her elder sister, and Daniel returns home with one distressing question on his mind: had the girls been lost or were they running away? And if so, who or what had they been running from?

But Daniel is trying to outrun his own demons. He left the police force after a number of disturbing events made his position untenable and now, as he attempts to uncover the truth behind what happened that night on the moor, his former life is threatening to catch up with him…

No Holds Barred  (2011)

Daniel quickly learns that a number of employees have been pressured into leaving and he soon comes into conflict with the foreman, who belongs to a notorious local family. All evidence points to them being involved in some very nasty business indeed: business they will do anything to protect.

Meeting with a lack of interest from official quarters, Daniel sets out to uncover the truth but, after several violent warnings, he begins to wonder… Has he bitten off more than he can chew?

Nothing but Lies  (2014)

Concerned for the safety of his fiancée Tami who is worried that she’s being watched by a sinister, hoodie-clad figure, Daniel Whelan’s former colleague, Joey Matsuki, has asked the ex-police dog handler and his faithful German Shepherd, Taz, to keep an eye on her on his behalf.

Working undercover as Tami’s temporary horsebox driver, Daniel soon suspects there may be more to the situation than meets the eye. As he questions Tami’s friends and neighbours, it becomes clear that something is not quite right. There are things people aren’t telling him; small but significant incidents that can’t be explained.

Then events take a tragic turn, and it becomes frighteningly apparent that there are those who will stop at nothing to prevent Daniel finding out the truth.

No Second Chances  (2016)

By lucky chance, ex-police officer Daniel Whelan happens to be on hand to take control of the situation, but for Lorna it’s the start of a nightmare. If Harvey isn’t abroad working, as she thought, then where is he?
